We are really delighted to share with you that today the Minister of Education, Chris Hipkins has announced that the site for our school to be rebuilt and co-located with MBC will be the McLauchlan Street site of MGC and Bohally Intermediate. We are thrilled that after several years of waiting, the planning for our new schools can finally get underway in the new year.
Our current site together with the Bohally site is a great location for the new co-located campus. It is close to our fantastic community facilities, provides ample space for two schools with a total of over 2000 students and staff and has a range of beautiful trees and plantings across the site. Proximity to the Taylor River reserve and safe cycle routes as well has having the Fulton Stream on site are added bonuses. We really appreciated being part of the thorough review of all possible sites undertaken by the Ministry and are very pleased with the outcome today. This announcement also provides certainty for students, parents and staff at Bohally Intermediate as they will move into brand new facilities on the current Marlborough Boys' College site.
We anticipate beginning discussions with the Ministry Property team in January about planning and construction timelines and will be able to share more information with you during Term 1 next year. As you will imagine, rebuilding and re-locating three schools is a complex project, however we are really looking forward to being part of this fantastic opportunity to provide first class facilities and unique community based campus of co-located single sex schooling.
A key outcome of the co-location consultation last year was the development of Learning Aspirations for our young people. They focus on the skills and capabilities that students need for their future and reflect the wider community ideas and feedback about the purpose and outcomes of education. We have been reviewing teaching and learning here at MGC to ensure that all students learn and develop their potential; we will continue this work alongside discussions about learning spaces that will inform the design of our new school. Your daughters will be a key part in providing feedback to teachers about what works for them.
While the schools are being built, all construction work will be planned and phased in a way that will minimise disruption to students and their learning. Maintenance of our current facilities will remain a priority as we are committed to ensuring our school is a welcoming and safe environment.
